COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CAN, SCREW CAP, METAL, 28-GAGE AND LIGHTER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE:
1.1 This commercial item description covers new metal cans made of 28-gage or lighter sheet metal tinplate for item packaging and packing for shipment and storage.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
2.1 These cans shall have capacities of 0.473 liter (1 pint), 3.785 liters (1 gallon), and 18.925 liters (5 gallons) with a tolerance of -0.0% and + 10.0%. Shapes shall be square, or rectangular, at the option of the supplier. The minimum coating on the cans shall be No. 20 or thicker in accordance with ASTM A624. Both ends shall be compound lined, double-seamed, in position. The closure shall be knurled screw cap. The caps shall be shipped attached to the cans. The cap and neck of the closure shall be fabricated from tinplate having a tin coating weight of No. 100 or greater per base box in accordance with ASTM A624.
2.2 One gallon and five gallon cans shall have a handle. The handle shall be either a wire handle or a formed bridge-type handle securely affixed to the top. The handle and attachment point shall be capable of lifting the can full of water without permanent deformity and two times the weight of a loaded can without failure.
